How Red Orchid works:
The process with Red Orchid is different than a standard publisher. We are interested in providing a platform for all quality works. However, our resources are limited and you must be accepted through our submission process in order to proceed with our services. Here are the steps we take in merging your book with our business:
1- We read through your manuscript. We first decide if the book is ready for publication. If we think it would be ready after we have offered about three hours of edit suggestions, then we will accept it. If we feel the book has potential but needs extensive editing, we will offer an editing service. Please note: Many of our published authors do not pay for any of our services. If the manuscript is in good shape, then there is no fee for our editing service. We will do one round of edits with you. Sometimes we reject books based on quality, but we also reject books due to marketability and target audience.
2- We help you design a quality cover with your total input. We have excellent illustrators who design covers based on the client's vision. If the free cover we have designed does not meet your expectations, you are welcome to hire an outside designer.
3- We format your manuscript for printing in Create Space (which is an enormous pain if you haven't done it, and is still a pain if you have lots of experience). You can use CreateSpace yourself for free, but we are skilled and experienced with this online tool.
4- We list your book on the Red Orchid website. It goes up for sale immediately. Lately, we have posted the book for sale a few days before it is actually ready to print. That way, your friends and family buy a copy and we use your royalty on those sales to print your first bulk order. (You're welcome to use this money differently but it has worked well for my other clients).
5- You earn $5 per book sold on Red Orchid and half of the Amazon royalty (usually around $3). We try to undersell Amazon and drive the market to the Red Orchid website instead. We take care of the online store, transaction fees, taxes and shipping the product, plus any customer service issues.
6- You are welcome to purchase your own book at cost and resell them or supply them to retailers and we don't take any commission from those efforts. Our desire and goal is to help you get your book out, so if we can work as a team doing that, then we both win. We have no issue supplying as many physical copies as you want, at cost plus shipping.
So essentially, we are a bit of a publishing hybrid. We are better than self-publishing in that we can offer editing and design services for free (plus group marketing with the other Red Orchid writers). We are a bit like your standard publisher in that we are interested in the quality of your product, and we have a vested interest in marketing it.
If you would like to submit your work for consideration, please email it to redorchidpublishing@gmail.com in either a .pdf or Word format.
